KHARTOUM, Sudan. December 8th, 2019. Abdalla Hamdok, Prime Minister of the civilian government in Sudan has said that Sudan’s troop presence in Yemen has been reduced from 15,000 to just 5,000 after he declared the 5-year old conflict unsolvable” through military action.

“Regarding Yemen we said that there is no military solution and there must be a political solution,” Hamdok told reporters at a briefing according to Reuters.

World at Large reported last week on the bilateral movements towards ending the disastrous conflict taken by both coalition nations like Saudi Arabia and now Sudan, and the Houthi rebel group that have controlled the country now for the duration of the war.

Sudan are one of several countries also including the UAE and Senegal among others, who allied with Saudi Arabia in 2015 to create the Coalition to Restore Democracy in Yemen, referring to the ousting of Saudi-backed president Hadi by the Houthis.

In a short step backwards, Yemeni anti-aircraft guns shot down two Saudi drones, bringing the total of recently-downed Saudi aircraft to 4, according to the editor at Yemen Now Nasser Arrabyee.

While the campaign to control the whole country has failed miserably, the final loose end the Saudis and Emiratis need to tie up before a real peace could be made is in South Yemen, particularly in the port city of Ada.

Emirati-backed proxies are fighting Saudi-backed militias in the south of the country, while the Yemeni population there, who lost independence when north and south Yemen were unified in the 90s, consider this an opportunity to get it back.
