“As legislators responsible for the expenditure of tens of billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars in military assistance in the conflict, we believe such involvement in this war also creates a responsibility for the United States to seriously explore all possible avenues, including direct engagement with Russia, to reduce harm and support Ukraine in achieving a peaceful settlement”.
This was the pitch that a base of 30 progressive Democrats made in a letter to President Biden urging him to negotiate a ceasefire with Russia, stating that as the risk for nuclear war has never been higher, and therefore it’s in the interests of the US people, the Ukrainians, the US Empire, and the world economy to bring about peace terms as soon as possible.
They urged him to “pair the military and economic support the United States has provided to Ukraine with a proactive diplomatic push, redoubling efforts to seek a realistic framework for a ceasefire”.
The letter was signed by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D – WA) and included noteworthy House war skeptics like Ro Khanna (D – CA) and Barbara Lee (D-CA).
They open the letter by showering praises on Biden for his current handling of Russia’s invasion, and condemn to destruction and death in Ukraine, but warn that the risks of “catastrophic escalation,” behoove the White House to try and open channels with the Kremlin.
“Your administration’s policy was critical to enable the Ukrainian people, through their courageous fighting and heroic sacrifices, to deal a historic military defeat to Russia,” they write.
However all 30 of the Representatives signed the $40 billion Ukraine Assistance Act, and so have no one more to blame for the death and destruction than themselves, since as they wrote, the critical enabling of the resistance, and therefore the continuation of the war, was only possible through their own military intervention.
In response to the letter, the White House rejected the idea of diplomacy with Russia. “It’s clear Mr. Putin is in no mood to negotiate,” said National Security Council spokesman John Kirby. “We’re not going to have conversations with Russian leadership without the Ukrainians being represented”.
The letter is the perfect example of the 21st century has been characterized by the moral instincts of American politicians interfering with any strategy to speak of for how to achieve the goals the US sets for herself from time to time.
