It may have been one of the largest stories in the history of the country—the executive branch, informing neither Congress nor the American people, had dozens of American soldiers engaged in training and reconnaissance inside Ukraine, in what is undoubtedly the largest escalation of US involvement since the war began
This was revealed only because a 21-year-old Air National Guardsman with a top-secret clearance level leaked documents to his friends on the chat platform Discord.
Now Representative Matt Gaetz (R – FL) has introduced a “Privileged Resolution of Inquiry” to the House that if passed would force the President and the Defense Sect. to release, within 14 days, a detailed report of the full US troop presence in Ukraine including special operators.
“The Biden Administration and other allied countries have been misleading the world on the state of the war in Ukraine,” Gaetz wrote in a statement. “There must be total transparency from this administration to the American people when they are gambling war with a nuclear adversary by having special forces operating in Ukraine”.
The Discord Leaks—a few hundred smartphone pictures of classified Pentagon documents, made headlines in early April with revelations on Ukraine, rampant US surveillance of allies and international figures like the UN General Secretary, intelligence assessments on sensitive topics like Taiwan, and others.
Mainstream media has tried to smear the leaker, 21-year-old Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, who shared them in a chat room on the gaming platform Discord.
One of the classified docs contains a map of Europe with numbers of “Pax” or special operators, in Ukraine and what their activities are. Dated to March 23rd, Great Britain had 50, Latvia had 17, France had 15, the US had 14, and the Netherlands had 1.
The leak confirmed an October 2022 report from The Intercept that said US special operations forces were deployed to Ukraine after Russia’s invasion.
On Monday, WaL reported on what the leaks revealed about American activities vis-a-vis China, reviewing an intelligence assessment that doubted Taiwan’s ability to defend itself from a Chinese air attack.
Congressman Gaetz recently introduced a resolution that would order Biden to remove all troops from Syrian oil fields. The resolution failed in a vote of 103-321, with only 56 Democrats and 47 Republicans voting in favor of the bill.
On March 28th Gaetz introduced another new bill under the War Powers Resolution that would command the President to order the military out of Somalia. WaL
